Watch student groups race the clock to build a boat from scratch using limited materials, ingenuity and teamwork.
One of AWBF’s most popular spectacles, the Quick & Dirty Boat Building Challenge puts creativity, ingenuity and teamwork to the test as groups of young people build a boat from scratch during the Festival, using limited materials and working against the clock.
By Sunday, the boats are taking shape as teams decorate and waterproof their creations, ready for the ultimate test on Monday: launching into Constitution Dock and racing under sail and oar before thousands of spectators.

Supported by Tasmanian Shipwrights & Co., the Challenge gives young people a hands-on introduction to boatbuilding, developing confidence, teamwork and problem-solving along the way, while celebrating the fun of simply having a go.
From humble beginnings at Oyster Cove Marina, a passion for wooden boats has grown into a thriving boatbuilding business, restoring classics while keeping Tasmania’s traditions alive.
